Olympic Soccer Preview: Medal Games Set for Men and Women [ Aug 07, 2012 ]

Led by two second half goals from Leandro Damiao, Brazil defeated South Korea, 3-0 and advanced to the Olympic gold medal game for the first time in 24 years. Damiao now has six goals in the tournament, making him the leading goal scorer amongst the men in London. On Friday, his team will face Mexico, who advanced with a 3-1 victory over Japan. Regardless of the outcome of the game, Mexico will leave London with their first medal of any kind in men’s Olympic soccer.

The US women came from behind three times in an epic Olympic semi-final to force overtime, and Alex Morgan’s header with :30 left in extra time of the 2nd OT period gave the Americans a thrilling 4-3 win over Canada. The US advances to the gold medal game against Japan on Thursday. Game time is scheduled for 2:45 pm eastern time on NBC Sports Network.

The game will be a much anticipated rematch of last year’s World Cup Final won by the Japanese. The US has never failed to qualify for the Olympic final, capturing three gold’s and a silver since women’s soccer became an official Olympic event in 1996.
