[STANFORD-SANTA CLARA] Defending champion Stanford extended its winning streak at home to 51 games with a 6-1 win over Santa Clara before sellout crowd of 2,084
at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal came back from a goal down at the half with a six-goal blitz in the second half. Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith
tried to look on the positive side, "When you choose to play a team like Stanford out of the gate, you want to know where you stand and we found that out tonight."
Stanford evened the
score on Mariah Nogueira’s header off Courtney Verloo’s corner kick in the 47th minute, took the lead when
defender Rachel Quon swooped into the box to knock in a loose ball in the 53rd minute and finished off the Broncos with four goals in seven minutes.
Junior forward Natalie Griffen scored the final two goals and had an assist in her first collegiate start.
"In the first half, I thought we
played them tough and our team scored a nice counterattack goal," added Smith. "In the second half they came out with tremendous confidence, aggressiveness and determination. They beat us in every
category in that second half but there were certainly good lessons for our team."
Both teams were missing key players. Stanford goalie Emily Oliver
is injured, while Chioma Ubogagu (Stanford) and Julie Johnston and Sofia Huerta
(Santa Clara) are at the Under-20 Women's World Cup that begins Sunday in Japan.
