In 1982, the Long Island Junior Soccer League established its own certification program for coaches that aimed to create a more practical and user friendly format that targeted a progression of varying age groups and abilities. After several years, the league worked in cooperation with the National Soccer Coaches Athletic Association to see if the LIJSL program could be approved as a national course. Soon after, the Long Island Junior Soccer League Coaching Academy earned NSCAA distinction and continues under the direction of LIJSL 1st Vice President Mario Maltese and Director of Coaching Education John Fitzgerald.
LIJSL clubs host the courses, which are led by league-appointed certified instructors who hold the highest certifications issued by the NSCAA. Approximately 25 courses are held annually within the LIJSL, which result in nearly 500 newly certified coaches. After completing the course progression, coaches may go on to pursue National and Advanced National certifications from the NSCAA.
